How much do African people care about environmental issues?

It is the question which made me join in this volunteer program.

I have worked for only 2 weeks, however I found that there are many people who are making some difference for environment. My colleague,who is a forest utilization coordinator, has been working very hard to create some ideas. Also, people visit and tell him new inventions to develop the idea with using his expertise. It is so much fun to just listen to their conversation because the ideas are something new to me. Today,Let me introduce one of them. 

The guy is a engineer of an industrial institute. When he was a college student, he wanted to make papers without using tree fibers. He researched various kinds of fibers and he finally created sheets of paper which is made of banana fibers.

アフリカの人は環境問題のことをどれぐらい考えてるのかな？

　↑　これを知りたくてわたしは協力隊に参加しました。

森林管理局で働きはじめてまだ２週間ですが、環境を意識して頑張っている人はわりといるもんだということがわかってきました。
というのも、わたしの後ろでおやじギャグを連発しながらも毎日真面目に働いているモーガンフリーマン似のMr.カビさんは森林資源の有効利用を日々考えるのが仕事の人で、この人を訪ねていろんな可能性を秘めたお客さんが来るのです。
このやりとりを耳をダンボにして聞いているだけでも勉強になります！
（ウガンダ英語がいまいち聞き取れないのでダンボはおろか、奈良の大仏サイズですが。）

いろいろ紹介したいのですが、先週はバナナの繊維で紙を作っている若者がやってきましたので、その話。

ウガンダの東大？マケレレ大学出身でウガンダの産業研究所におつとめのGodfreyさん。
写真の本の著者です。（ちなみにこの本もバナナの茎の部分の繊維でできているらしい、うっそー）
在学中に、これ以上木を切らずに紙を作る方法はないかと研究してできたのがこのバナナペーパー。

左はこの若者が書いた本、左上はウガンダに持って来たけど今のところ出番がないアイテム。

バナナの木の茎から繊維を取り出してカットし、蒸す、ゆでる、洗う、漂白する、パルプにする〜〜e.t.c.
インドや日本の大学なんかも協力して作り出したそうです。
もうすでに他の地域でこういう紙は製造されているのかもしれませんが、何しろウガンダはbanana republicと呼ばれているほどバナナに覆われた暮らしですから、このバナナペーパーが沢山生産できるようになったら木の伐採なんかも減っていくんじゃなかろうか、、というわけです。

Since Uganda is called "a banana republic," I hope this invention helps to stop the deforestation.
Now, he is trying to make products with using this banana paper. For example, the brown package in this picture is the one of banana fiber paper products.The package is for chocolate sold in Uganda!(The chocolate factory is owned by a Japanese guy by the way.) 
i hope this technology being applied for shopping bags instead of using plastic bags.
My colleague decided to introduce technology to executive director of our organization and look for opportunities to apply.

やさしいテクスチャです。

今はこのバナナで作った紙で、ギフトラッピング用の紙袋を生産したり、アフリカンクラフトとして紙ビーズの材料にしているんだそうです。
写真右側のバナナペーパーで作られた箱は、なんとウガンダにあるチョコレート屋さん（なんとオーナーは日本人のお兄さんなんだって！）で使われている箱です。
Godfreyさんと一緒にやっているのかはわかりませんが、チョコだけでなくパッケージのバナナペーパーもお店で手作りされているそうで、すごいですよね〜

まだまだ流通させるには時間がかかりそうですが、例えばレジ袋を、バナナペーパーの紙袋で提供するようになったらすごくいいのになあ。（今となっては黒い袋もう使いにくいし→14日のもう一個の記事参照）
わたしは名刺の用紙に使ってみたいな、、、、。

さてさて、モーガンフリーマン似のMr.カビさんは、Mr.Godfreyさんのこの取り組みを、森林管理局の一番偉い人になんかできないかな？って相談することにしたそうです。
うまくいくといいね！


ということで、環境を意識して頑張っている人はいるもんだというネタの第一弾でした。

今日は情報提供にとどまってしまいましたが、そのうちGodfreyさんのところに話を聞きに行ったりとか、チョコレート屋さんに行ったりしてみようと思います。

Finally, let me mention about what my colleague said about sustainability.
"Invention itself cannot keep sustainability. Sustainability is going to be maintained only since you create employment with the invention."
